U Value – what is it?

   |   By  |  0 Comments

Renovating your home can be daunting to those unaware or new to construction. It can get complicated when looking into specifics for your building materials and people can struggle to know which product to pick in such a large market of businesses. In this article, we will explain what a U-value of a roof light is to give you a better understanding of what business you should decide on.

The U-value or U-factor of building material is the thermal transmittance. This can be described as the measurement of heat loss that material is creating. In more specific terms of our roof lights, it is the measurement of the rate at that heat can transfer through the window. This means the lower the U-value, the better the product’s insulation and the lower the amount of heat wasted by the product. According to building regulations, the U-value of windows should not be any higher than 1.2 as anything more will let out too much heat in your new home renovations. When looking for a product, you as customers should be looking for the lowest U-value you can find.

At customrooflights, the U-value of all our products is 0.6 W/m. This is one of the lowest U-values you will find on the roof lights market and we are very proud of it. With our product, you can ensure your indoor home temperature can be maintained efficiently. Our high-quality roof lights are also triple-glazed, self-cleaning and argon filled. We can supply over 30 different sizes anywhere in the UK. If you have any more questions about our products please give us a call at 01202 802111 or message us on our Instagram (@customrooflights1) or our Facebook page.

Advantages of a rooflight for your property

Energy efficiency

By having a rooflight in your lounge, corridor, kitchen, or bedroom there’s less need for artificial lighting during the day or summer evenings. Using less artificial lighting not only saves on your electricity bills, but it also reduces your carbon footprint which makes your home more energy efficient. In 2018, it’s important to consider the environment when making changes to your property, rooflights are perfect for environmentally friendly homeowners wanting to utilise natural sunlight.

Privacy benefits

With buildings being so close together in this day and age, it’s a struggle to get total privacy in many homes across the UK – especially in London! Lots of natural lighting for homeowners is a luxury, and you sometimes run the risk of having windows directly in sight of your neighbours, which is not good in a bathroom setting. Rooflights are great for privacy, they allow natural lighting in a room without a homeowner having awkward eye contact with neighbours or passers-by.

How to avoid rogue rooflight traders

   |   By  |  0 Comments

Over the last few years there has been a sharp rise in the number of rogue rooflight traders in the UK. We run down the reasons why avoiding rogue rooflight traders is so important and what you can do to avoid falling victim to a scam.

Common rogue trader tactics

Rogue rooflight traders will rely on a number of tactics to reel you in, including unannounced visits to your home and putting leaflets through doors. Reputable companies will very rarely adopt these practices, so it’s always best to err on the side of caution and avoid engaging in further service with these companies or individuals.

It is also worth considering the fact that rogue rooflight traders may lie about the capabilities of their products. Common issues with sub-spec rooflights include water leaks, poor thermal efficiency and easily shattered glass. It is therefore important that you ensure the rooflights you purchase are up to the task.

As leading rooflight manufacturers based in the UK, we ensure that the products we advertise is the exact product you receive. If you have any questions about any of our rooflight products, don’t hesitate to contact us on 01202 802111 – we are happy to answer any of your enquiries.

Use a contractor experienced in rooflight installation

It is in our clients’ hands to arrange a suitable contractor to carry out the installation of our rooflights, though we do provide a handy installation guide to ensure they are installed correctly. To source a good installation expert, look for positive reviews, ask friends, family or neighbours, or consult reputable directories like Checkatrade.com. Once you have selected a rooflight installtion specialist, you should also ensure they have all the necessary insurance and ideally a guarantee for their services, just in case something does go wrong.

The surprising advantages of natural daylight

   |   By  |  0 Comments

We all know the obvious benefits of natural sunlight – it feels lovely and warm against our skin, it helps brighten up a dark room, and is a great source of vitamin D – but did you know there are many more benefits most of us may find surprising?

More light increases the value of your home

A study conducted by Building Technology Innovations found that because natural daylight helps make rooms seem larger than they actually are, people were willing to pay more for the property. Innovative rooflights discreetly illuminate the small rooms of your property, and, if you have a beautiful view, can help frame it to further increase your property’s desirability.

Reduce your energy consumption with rooflights

In your average building, it’s been reported that artificial lighting is responsible for an incredible 20% – 40% of its energy consumption. When you capitalise on natural sunlight by installing a rooflight in your home however, you can make a serious impact on the amount of energy you use, helping to reduce both your utility bills and carbon footprint. At Custom Rooflights, all our rooflights and skylights have a U Value of just 0.83W/m which means that they let in that all important sun through their self-cleaning glass while maintaining excellent thermal efficiency.

Protect your children’s eyesight

Studies have shown that children who are regularly exposed to natural daylight lower their chances of developing nearsightedness, or myopia.  This is because natural light stimulates the production of dopamine which helps regulate healthy eye development which is why scientists have recommended children should spend 1-3 hours a day in natural sunlight. However, this is not always possible so it’s a good idea to make sure your home is flooded with light by installing skylights or rooflights in darker areas to ensure maximum exposure.

Sunlight makes you happy

According to research, exposure to sunlight triggers something in your brain that releases the happy hormone, serotonin, which is associated with helping improve people’s mood by promoting feelings of calm and positivity. When a person has low levels of light exposure, their serotonin levels tend to be low which has been linked to increased risks of depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). So, to help boost your mood, why not brighten up your home with a skylight from Custom Rooflights

Take advantage of all these benefits by installing quality rooflights from Custom Rooflights, market leaders for the manufacture and supply of skylights and rooflights for customers across the UK. To discover more or arrange a quote, contact us online or call 01202 802111 today.

The benefits of installing glass rooflights in your home

   |   By  |  0 Comments

Rooflights are becoming increasingly popular in homes – and for good reason! Investing in glass rooflights offers you a range of benefits that you can’t achieve with regular vertical windows.

Privacy

If you are someone who strongly values their privacy, rooflights can be a godsend, particularly in busy residential areas. The angle and placement of glass rooflights makes it near impossible for nosy neighbours and passers-by to see in though them.

This perk makes rooflights and skylights a popular choice for bathrooms, as you don’t need to sacrifice natural light for the sake of privacy. You also don’t need to worry about the added cost and hassle of curtains or blinds.

More natural light

Due to their placement in your ceiling, flat rooflights are capable of allowing up to three times more natural light into a room than a vertical window. If you have a room that does not face any exterior walls, then a glass rooflight could be the perfect solution for brightening up the interior without resorting to excessive artificial lighting.

Create a focal point

Unlike vertical windows, glass rooflight can be used to make a statement and act as a focal point for the room. Installing a rooflight or skylight above an open plan kitchen counter, dining room table, or living room seating area is an excellent way of drawing attention to the centrepieces of furniture.

How to illuminate a dark room

   |   By  |  0 Comments

A bright and airy home can help boost your mood, lower stress levels and aid relaxation but what do you do when your rooms suffer from poor light infiltration? At Custom Rooflights, we believe you shouldn’t settle for living in the dark so to help our customers get the most out of their homes, our experts have rounded up some of their best hints and tricks for transforming a dark space into a light-filled oasis.

Install a custom rooflight

Yes, we may be a little bit biased, but there really is no better way to transform a dark area in your home than by installing a custom roof or skylight to flood the room with natural light. As market leaders for the manufacture and supply of first-class flat or walk-on skylights and rooflights, we are proud to have helped countless people make the most out of their homes with our quality products and service.

Paint your walls and ceilings white

Painting the room in neutral or white colours will allow the daylight to bounce off the walls and help create a brighter space. There are even special paints that have been specifically designed to help reflect up to 2 times more light than standard paint.

Use mirrors to reflect light

Hanging lots of mirrors is a sure way to boost illumination because when the sun’s rays hit the shiny surface, they reflect back into the room. If possible, try placing a large mirror directly across from the window and arranging smaller ones in an interesting pattern around the room to really make the most of this great tip.

Choose a lighter curtain fabric

Ditch the heavy, light-absorbing curtains and instead opt for fabrics made from lighter materials or translucent blinds. These sheer textiles will still give you privacy without compromising on light.

Let light in with clean windows

This may seem obvious but simply giving your windows a good clean can let lots of extra light filter through the sparkling glass. The great news for those who find window cleaning a chore is that at Custom Rooflights all our skylights come with state-of-the-art self-cleaning glass, so you can be sure of maximum light penetration without having to lift a finger. Genius.

Here at Custom Rooflights, we have earned an excellent reputation for our high-quality skylights and rooflights as well as our impeccable customer service.  If you’re looking to transform your home with a custom skylight, please don’t hesitate to get in touch today by contacting us on 01202 802111

Guide to Buying a Custom Rooflight

   |   By  |  0 Comments

Installing a sky or rooflight transforms a dark unwelcoming room into a bright, inviting and relaxing space but with so many options available, we’ve created this guide to help you find the perfect skylight for your home.

Decide where you want your rooflight installed

Once you’ve decided on the room you want to flood with light, you need to decide exactly where you want your rooflight positioned and carefully consider the practicalities of its location. Ensure the extra light will fall in just the right spot while avoiding casting extra glare on a wall-mounted TV or causing sun damage to a painting or bookshelves. Our experienced experts at Custom Rooflights will be happy to help you decide this.

Be sure what size skylight you want

There’s nothing worse than regretting a choice you made in a rush. Take your time deciding what size skylight you want, and how many. Try marking out different sizes with masking tape to give you a more accurate idea of what it will look like when installed. Our rooflights come in a wide range of sizes so you’re sure to find one to suit your needs perfectly.

Consider how you’ll keep it clean

The build-up of dirt and debris on your skylight can harm its look and effectiveness, so consider how you’ll clean it to keep it looking and working at its best. Though it may sound too good to be true, every Custom Made Skylight comes with self-cleaning glass – it really does work!

Is it energy efficient?

It’s good to know that as well as flooding your home with natural light, your rooflight is doing its bit for the environment. Our triple glazed fixed models boast a U Value of 0.83W/m, that’s 40% more efficient than required by building regulations, so you can rest assured your skylight doesn’t suffer from any unnecessary heat loss, helping you stay green and saving you money too.

Do I need planning permission?

As skylights lie flat against your roof, you often don’t need planning permission to install one. However, we recommend you check with your local council before doing so as rules and regulations can vary.

If you’re considering installing a rooflight to illuminate your home, contact our expert team today on 01202 802111 and we’ll be happy to discuss your needs.

What is a walk on rooflight?

   |   By  |  0 Comments

As the name suggests, walk on rooflights are windows designed to be walked on without compromising on the amount of natural light filtering through to the room below. They are perfect for when you want to flood a room with light while maintaining the ability to walk safely across the floor above.

Flood your home with light

Walk on rooflights are great for changing dark, neglected areas of your home into a light and airy, usable room. Just imagine, you could transform your dark and unused basement into a practical home office, the library of your dreams or even the games room you’ve always longed for. What’s more, the space above this bright functionable room gains the added benefit of a truly striking feature that you can dare friends and family to walk over!

Use with a flat roof terrace

They are also an ideal solution for illuminating rooms with a flat roof terrace, often without the need to manoeuvre through the planning permission minefield. At Custom Rooflights, our walk on windows are designed to lie flush meaning any visual impact is kept to a minimum – great news for you and your neighbours.  What’s more, if you use your roof terrace as valuable outdoor space, you’ll still be able to use it as you did before as the rooflight is completely safe to walk on.

Our walk on rooflights

Our walk on rooflights come in a variety of sizes, are double glazed to provide exceptional noise reduction and boast a total thickness of 46.28mm, including 26.28mm of specially toughened glass, to ensure your safety. All our windows come with self-cleaning glass and a U-value of just 0.83W/m so you can rest assured your heat won’t be escaping through your walk on rooflight.

Custom Rooflights are one of the leading suppliers and manufactures of walk on rooflights in the UK. If you’d like to discuss further how you could benefit from one, contact us on 01202 802111 and one of our experts will be happy to help.

4 ways to make a small kitchen appear larger

   |   By  |  0 Comments

Wondering how you can make your small, cramped kitchen look bigger? Here are 5 ways you can make your kitchen appear larger without major development work.

1. Use lighter colours

As a rule, dark colours will make a space seem smaller, whilst lighter colours make a room appear more spacious. If your kitchen looks small and gloomy, a simple bit of redecorating to incorporate some brighter colours can make a huge difference.

2. More natural light

Daylight is one of the most valuable tools in your arsenal and it doesn’t cost you a thing! A bright, well-lit kitchen will look much more spacious than a dimly lit one; investing in new sliding patio doors and windows is a great option.

Skylights and rooflights are also an excellent choice for kitchens, as they not only let in up to three times more natural light than a vertical window but can help illuminate dark corners and areas further away from your existing windows.

We are leading suppliers of durable, high-quality flat rooflights, delivered straight to your door at an affordable price! Browse our range today.

3. Declutter

Clutter and busy worktops are sure to make your kitchen look cramped and smaller than it should. Make the most of kitchen drawers and cupboards to tidy away any loose items and give every utensil a home.

4. Use mirrors

Mirrors are excellent for creating the illusion of space. Unfortunately, many people reserve them for use in their bathrooms and bedrooms, and rarely consider the benefit they could serve in the kitchen.

A mirror reflects natural light and instantly opens up a room. Consider mirrored cupboard doors or a mirrored wall space under your wall cabinets and above your worktops to create a more open plan feel.
